Dr. Harold J. Katzman |
ABOUT YOUR DOCTOR
| Dr. Katzman, a native New Yorker, attended Brandies
University as an undergraduate. After graduation, he moved west to
work at the UCLA Department of Thoracic Surgery while earning a master's
degree in Genetics in the UCLA Department of Biology. His research
involved developing experimental heart-lung machines and examining liver
functions. During this time his studies on the role of the thymus
gland in the immunological system were published. After receiving
his graduate school degree, he attended Chicago Medical School and upon
graduation, served his medical internship at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in
Los Angeles.
During the Vietnam War he trained as a Flight surgeon in the Air Force at the School of Aerospace Medicine, Brookes Air Force Base near Washington, D.C. Upon honorable discharge from tne air Force, he entered an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1972, he graduated from the residency program and moved to Los Angeles where he opened his ophthalmology practice in Santa Monica. During the subsequent years he has been an instructor at the Foundation of Education at St. John's Medical Center in the Cataract Phacoemulsification and Lens Implant Course. He has served as Chief of Ophthalmology at St. John's, and consultant for The Center For The Partially Sighted. Fro the past 20 years he has actively worked on the Executive Board of the Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity and has been president. with continued interest in research, he participated in various clinical trial studies including joint projects with the Diabetes Department at University of Southern California Hospital. this research assessed the efficacy of aldose reductase inhibitors to suppress diabetic retinopathy. since his entry into private practice, he has written articles for and acted as editor of The International Cataract Journal. Dr. Katzman enjoys traveling, classical music, bicycling and skiing. His wife, Jeanne, is a speech pathologist and does research in communication. His two daughters, Shana and Leslie, are working toward their doctoral degrees. Leslie studies growing hydroponic spinach in Cornell' Department of Horticulture.
